ASSASSINS'S CREED CHRONICLES:BRINGING THE SERIES TO 2D

Description:

The first thing you’ll notice when stepping foot into these new worlds is how unique and great they look. Each of the three chapters adheres to a different style -- China is filled with a painterly, muted series of brushstrokes, India is a bright and colorful depiction, while Russia has a distinctly-propaganda look and feel to it. Having spent most of my time with the China piece of the trilogy, the sparse use of color leads to some really evocative moments. Blood is heavily juxtaposed with the greys of the environment, and streaks of color draw your eye towards surfaces you can climb, much like how red was used in Mirror's Edge.

Aesthetics aside, I was really impressed by how fluidly all of the core tenants of the series made the move to 2D. Chronicles places a much-appreciated heavier emphasis on stealth -- if you get spotted by a handful of guards, you’re probably not going to make it out of there alive. You have relatively low health, and an enemy can cut you down pretty quickly. Thankfully, your greatest asset here is your ability to hide in the shadows, move from cover-point to cover-point, and navigate the environment in a quick and silent manner.

GamePlay:

The actual act of playing Chronicles feels a lot like playing Klei’s fantastic Mark of the Ninja. Climbing along the outside of a building, scurrying from shadow to shadow, and using your grappling hook to climb along the ceiling of a room all felt fantastic. Enemies' vision cones are represented in an easy-to-digest manner, which generally lets you know exactly how far away you can be without being spotted.
But while I really enjoyed my time in these large, open levels, I couldn't help but feel like too many of the encounters relied on trial and error in order to pass. It seemed like a lot of rooms had a single way of solving the puzzle, as opposed to the sandbox assassinations that peppered Unity and provided the best moments of that game. I found myself dying and having to reload from a checkpoint about a dozen times on certain encounters before I realized exactly what the game wanted me to do. Thankfully the load times were super quick, but I still found myself getting frustrated when I hit these walls.

More Over:

Aside from the frustrating moments, Chronicles’ natural ebb and flow unfolds nicely. After making it through a tense, enemy-filled level that required an impressive level of stealth, I entered a much faster-paced stage where I had to escape a burning dock as the flames constantly bit at my heels. The pace and energy of this stage was great, and it delivered a great sense of power as I used my forward momentum to slice down any and every enemy that stood in my way. Obviously the game wouldn’t work if every level were like this, but as the occasional palate cleanser, it was much appreciated.

While most of my time was spent with the China portion of the Chronicles trilogy, I got to play a bit of India. I really dug the different art style -- the wider color palette was a departure from China’s simple brushstrokes, but it was just as effective. The tone of this chapter was also different -- where my time with China was primarily based in what felt like reality, India had some mystical elements that included an ancient temple with some decidedly-futuristic laser technology. The differences between the two got me excited about how the tone will shift throughout the trilogy, but also got me really excited for what we’ll see in the Russia chapter.

THE WITCHER 3 WILD HUNT

Description:

The world is in chaos. The air is thick with tension and the smoke of burnt villages. The fearsome Empire of Nilfgaard has struck again, ravaging the hapless Northern Kingdoms. The once-mighty who tried to use Geralt for their own gain are now gone. In these uncertain times, no one can say what fortune holds in store, who will bring peace to the world and who will cause it only misery. But a force darker and deadlier emerges. The petty men and women commanding tin-plated armies fail to understand that their conflict is child’s play compared to the Wild Hunt, the otherworldly threat which now looms. These ghastly spectral riders have for ages plagued humankind, bringing misery to the world. Yet this time the Wild Hunt seeks one person in particular: the one individual Destiny itself bestowed upon Geralt, the one soul Geralt considers kin.

The climactic third game in the fantasy RPG series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a unique combination of a non-linear story and an open world -- a character-driven, non-linear story experience focused on player choice, tactical combat and a rich, living environment. This world is populated with intelligent inhabitants and animated by new mechanics that make it a dynamic, living, breathing place. As players travel the world, witnessing many a sunrise or sunset, enduring torrential rains or sweltering heat, they see predators hunting their prey, villages defending themselves against monsters, lovers meeting by moonlight. The new in-game economy system varies the price of goods based on surrounding conditions or their place of origin, encouraging players to seek out through hunting and collecting items that are in demand. With a re-envisioned approach to the narrative, the game will be accessible to both newcomers and old time fans, and a tutorial eases players into the game. Combat has been redesigned in order to combine traditional RPG elements with the speed and precision of a dedicated fighting game. All of these gameplay features are integrated into a robust RPG system at the heart of the game.

GamePlay:

CD Projekt RED has said that it is not necessary to have played the previous games to fully enjoy Wild Hunt. While similar to the previous Witcher games, Wild Hunt has improved on several aspects from past games. Combat revolves around an action role-playing game system combined with the use of magic. The fighting system has been completely revamped. Wild Hunt introduces some new mechanics, such as witcher-sense, combat on horseback, and at sea, swimming underwater, and using a crossbow. Additionally, Geralt can now jump, climb, and vault over smaller obstacles. The climbing mechanics have been described as "not exactly" like Assassin's Creed, but more "similar to what we have in Uncharted."Item creation and potion brewing still remains as in previous games, but has been modified from The Witcher 2. There are 10 witcher signs, 5 original ones, each having 1 alternative form.

The setting is more than "30 times larger" than previous Witcher games, requiring players to use a sailboat to some locations and ride by horseback to others. However, fast travelling around the areas of known locations are also possible. The Witcher 3 has been described as "20% bigger than Skyrim".

Each action the player does will affect the world; every quest has a plethora of options on how to complete it, and every outcome is different each time. CD Projekt RED anticipates approximately 100 hours for the completion of the game, 50 of them belonging to side quests, and 50 belonging to the main story line.

The game features a dynamic day and night system, realistic AI, responsive and dynamic environments. The day and night cycle will influence some monsters and their powers, similar to how a werewolf would gain powers during the night of a full moon. The game also features a dynamic beard growth system, in which the beard of the playable character Geralt will grow when he travels between regions. According to the developer, the beard will grow "in different states". However, this feature will not be available after the player downloaded the free Beard and Hairstyle DLC.

Ciri, an exceptional swordfighter with mythical powers, will be a playable character for part of the game.
